E-rickshaw Driver Arrested for Impersonating Haryana Police Officer

Gurgaon Police have taken a 34-year-old man into custody. He allegedly posed as a Haryana Police sub-inspector to avoid paying toll taxes and secure free stays in hotels. The arrest followed a complaint from a hotel manager in Gurgaon.

Details of the Arrest and Investigation

Police apprehended Mukesh Kumar on January 17 from the Civil Lines area. Kumar is a graduate and hails from Kasni village in Jhajjar district. The hotel manager reported that a man in a Haryana Police uniform checked in using an Aadhaar card for identification.

Later, the same individual returned to the reception. He made unnecessary inquiries about the room, which raised suspicions among the hotel staff. When questioned, Kumar panicked and tried to flee. Hotel employees helped detain him until police arrived.

During initial questioning, Kumar admitted he was not a police officer. He said he wore the uniform to create an impression of authority among the public. A case was registered at Civil Lines police station, leading to his arrest the same day.

Motives and Recovered Items

Kumar revealed during interrogation that he drives a rented e-rickshaw in Khatu, Rajasthan. He frequently travels between Jhajjar and Khatu. To avoid repeated toll tax payments on this route and display false influence, he obtained a fake Special Police Officer identity card.

He paid Rs 500 for the fake SPO card from an individual in Jhajjar. Kumar also got a Haryana Police sub-inspector uniform stitched for Rs 2,200 from Jharoda Kalan in Delhi. Police recovered several items from his possession, including:

  • An Aadhaar card
  • A PAN card
  • A fake SPO identity card
  • The sub-inspector police uniform

Legal Proceedings and Further Actions

Police produced Kumar before a Gurgaon court on Sunday. The court remanded him to a day in police custody for further questioning. Authorities aim to ascertain if he had accomplices or was involved in additional offences.

Officials said Kumar will likely be remanded to judicial custody later on Monday. The investigation continues as police explore all aspects of this impersonation case.
