Dumka Man Arrested for Brutal Murder and Financial Theft

In a shocking incident in Dumka district, a 22-year-old man was arrested on Monday for allegedly strangling a 28-year-old woman to death and transferring Rs 1 lakh from her bank account. The accused, identified as Jageshwar Marandi, is accused of committing the crime on February 10, according to police officials.

Details of the Crime and Investigation

The victim, Sarodhani Hembram, a daily wager from Tikapahari village, was reported missing after she failed to return home. Her family launched a search and filed a missing person's report at the Muffassil police station on February 20. The investigation took a grim turn when police recovered her decomposed body from a well in Bagjhopa village on Monday.

Police stated that on February 10, Marandi lured Hembram to a secluded spot under a false pretext. He then snatched her phone and demanded the password for her online payment app. When she refused, he brutally thrashed her, forcibly transferred Rs 1 lakh to his own account, and subsequently strangled her to death. After the murder, he dumped her body in a nearby well and continued with his normal life, attempting to evade detection.

Technical Probe Leads to Arrest

A technical investigation revealed the suspicious transfer of funds from Sarodhani's account on February 10, which directly implicated Marandi. Following this lead, police arrested him and, after interrogation, he confessed to the crimes. Officer-in-charge Lawrenceia Kerketta of the Muffassil police station provided details, stating, "Acting on information from the accused, we retrieved the decomposed body from the well and sent it for post-mortem examination on Tuesday. Charges of murder and tampering of evidence have been registered against him."

The case highlights the increasing risks associated with digital financial transactions and personal safety in rural areas. Authorities are emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity awareness and prompt reporting of suspicious activities to prevent such tragedies.
