In a daring escape that turned into a swift capture, a suspected drug peddler in Chhattisgarh's Ambikapur town stole a police van after leaping from a rooftop, only to be arrested within an hour thanks to a mobile phone left behind in the vehicle.
The Incident
On late Tuesday evening, a police team led by trainee Deputy Superintendent of Police Nishant Kurre arrived at Sattipara under Kotwali police limits to search the home of a suspect. As officers moved toward the house, Mukesh Namdev, identified as a relative of the primary target, spotted them. Without hesitation, he vaulted off the rooftop, sprinted to the road, and found a parked police patrol vehicle with the keys inside and no one in the driver's seat. Seizing the opportunity, Namdev jumped in and sped away.
Immediate Aftermath
When the officers exited the house moments later, they found the driveway empty. Panic ensued, and a pursuit was launched. Nearby CCTV footage revealed the stolen van with Namdev at the wheel, providing a clear trail.
The Breakthrough
The crucial clue came from a mistake: a police team member's mobile phone was left inside the van. Police immediately placed the phone under surveillance, pinpointed its live location, and dispatched a unit to the spot. Namdev was apprehended, and both the vehicle and the phone were recovered.
Timeline
From the initial escape to the arrest, the entire sequence unfolded in less than two hours. The fleeting getaway was undone by a small oversight, underscoring how leaving behind a personal item can become the loudest clue in a hurried escape.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of attention to detail in law enforcement operations. The swift action by the police team ensured that justice was served promptly.
