Tragic Accident at Chennai Port Claims Driver's Life After Truck Plunges into Sea

Freak Accident Details: Cabin Detachment Leads to Fatal Plunge
The fatal mishap took place when the front cabin of the trailer truck unexpectedly detached while the vehicle was in motion. This caused the entire truck to topple into the sea, which was approximately 100 feet deep at that location. The driver, identified as Muthu Mariappan, 35, from Tuticorin district, was tragically trapped inside the cabin as it sank.
Preliminary investigations by port authorities revealed that Mariappan had just unloaded a container at the Chennai port and was driving the trailer truck out of the premises during the early hours. However, he inadvertently entered an unauthorized section of the port—specifically the coastal berth where containers are stored. Workers in the area reportedly warned him not to proceed further, but the accident occurred shortly after.
Massive Rescue Operation and Recovery Efforts
Following the incident, a large-scale search and recovery operation was launched involving port police and fire and rescue services personnel. The operation lasted for five hours, during which teams used a crane to retrieve the submerged vehicle from the sea. The driver's body was found trapped inside the cabin and was subsequently recovered.
The body of Muthu Mariappan was sent to the Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death and gather further forensic evidence.
