Dharwad Court Delivers 20-Year Sentence in Minor Rape Case

In a significant verdict, the special judge at the second district and sessions court in Dharwad, handling Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) cases, has sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl. The court also imposed a substantial penalty and mandated compensation for the survivor, underscoring the severity of the crime.

Details of the Conviction and Sentencing

The convict, identified as Umesh Ratnappa Lamani, aged 30 and a resident of Nelliharavi tanda in Kalghatgi taluk, was found guilty of raping a 12-year-old girl. Judge Rajkumar C, who presided over the case, convicted Umesh and ordered him to pay a penalty of Rs 60,500. Additionally, the court directed the government to provide a compensation of Rs 6 lakh to the survivor, aiming to support her recovery and future well-being.

Incident and Investigation Timeline

The horrific incident occurred on August 16, 2022, when the girl was waiting at the Nelliharavi bus stand. Umesh, noticing her alone, approached and convinced her that he would drop her off on his motorcycle. Instead, he took her to a secluded field in Bammigatti, where he sexually assaulted her. Following the crime, a case was promptly registered at the Kalghatagi police station.

Police Inspector Shrishail Koujalgi led the investigation, gathering evidence and filing a chargesheet against Umesh in court. The legal proceedings saw Public Prosecutor Shaila Angadi representing the survivor, ensuring her voice was heard throughout the trial. The court's decision reflects a firm stance against such heinous acts, particularly those involving minors, and highlights the effectiveness of the Pocso Act in delivering justice.

This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat sexual violence against children in India, with courts taking stringent measures to punish offenders and provide relief to victims. The compensation order is a crucial step in aiding the survivor's rehabilitation, while the imprisonment term aims to deter similar crimes in the future.
