Dhanbad Excise Department Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Liquor Trade Ahead of Civic Elections
In a significant enforcement operation targeting the illicit alcohol trade, excise officials in Dhanbad conducted a major raid on Wednesday, seizing a substantial quantity of illegally produced mahua liquor. The action took place in the Jognakocha area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Baliapur police station.
Massive Haul of Contraband Liquor and Raw Materials Confiscated
During the meticulously planned raid, the excise team successfully confiscated 400 liters of illegally distilled mahua liquor, a potent country-made alcoholic beverage. In addition to the finished product, officials also seized an enormous quantity of raw materials, specifically 1,000 kilograms of fermented mahua, which is the primary ingredient used in brewing this type of illicit liquor. Demonstrating a zero-tolerance policy, the raiding team proceeded to destroy all the confiscated fermented mahua on the spot to prevent any possibility of it re-entering the illegal supply chain.
Dismantling the Illegal Production Infrastructure
The enforcement drive extended beyond mere seizure. Officials took decisive action to cripple the production capabilities of the illegal operation by dismantling and completely destroying four makeshift furnaces. These furnaces were the critical equipment used for the distillation and brewing processes. Their destruction represents a direct blow to the operational capacity of the illicit liquor manufacturers in the area.
Election-Linked Enforcement Drive and Official Statement
This raid is not an isolated incident but part of a broader, district-wide special enforcement campaign launched by the excise department. The timing is strategically aligned with the upcoming civic body polls scheduled for February 23. Excise Inspector Joy Hembrom explicitly connected the intensified efforts to the electoral calendar, stating, "A special enforcement campaign is being carried out ahead of the civic polls to curb illegal liquor distribution, which often spikes before elections." The statement underscores a proactive approach to prevent the common trend of increased illicit liquor circulation during election periods, which can be used for voter influence and other malpractices.
Suspects Identified and Legal Proceedings Initiated
Preliminary investigations from the raid have led to the identification of two individuals allegedly at the center of this illegal operation. They have been named as Dukhan Ravani and Manoj Ravani. Authorities have confirmed that formal legal proceedings are now being initiated against those involved. The charges will be framed under the relevant sections of the Bihar Excise Act, which governs such offenses in the region.
Ongoing Investigation and Future Implications
The case remains active, with further investigation currently underway. The excise department's focus is now on two key objectives:
- To identify any additional persons who may be connected to this illegal liquor racket.
- To conclusively determine whether the seized liquor was specifically intended for distribution during the sensitive election period leading up to the civic polls.
This operation in Baliapur serves as a strong warning and demonstrates the administration's commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring a fair electoral process by cracking down on activities that could undermine it.
