New Delhi witnessed significant traffic disruptions on Tuesday as planned security-related restrictions were enforced across central Delhi between noon and evening. The measures, implemented in phases, forced numerous commuters to take lengthy detours, with many reporting extended delays and inconvenience.
Phased Restrictions Cause Widespread Disruption
Authorities stated that the restrictions were imposed on a need basis to regulate traffic flow and ensure security in the area. The first phase of restrictions was active from 12pm to 5pm, affecting several key stretches. During this period, halting and parking were strictly prohibited on Janpath Road, the Windsor Place roundabout, ITO W-Point, Mathura Road, Bhairon Marg, and the India Gate C-Hexagon. Vehicles found parked in violation of these rules were promptly towed away by traffic officials.
Evening Phase Intensifies Commuter Woes
The second phase of restrictions was enforced from 5.30pm to 8.30pm, further compounding the traffic woes. Similar prohibitions were applied to Mother Teresa Crescent, Teen Murti Marg, Akbar Road, MLNP, Janpath Road, and Baba Kharak Singh Marg. Commuters were strongly advised to avoid sensitive corridors such as Raisina Road, Rafi Marg, and Tolstoy Marg to minimize delays.
Traffic Police Deploy Extensive Measures
A traffic police officer explained that advisories regarding the restrictions were issued online in advance to alert the public. Additionally, between 700 and 800 personnel were deployed across central Delhi to manage the situation and enforce the rules effectively.
Reasons Behind the Stringent Measures
The officer clarified that the restrictions were necessitated by multiple factors. These included planned dignitary movements at various locations throughout the day and an evening rehearsal for the upcoming Beating Retreat ceremony, a significant event in the national capital's calendar.
The combination of these security protocols led to severe traffic congestion, with many commuters, particularly those near Janpath, remaining stranded for extended periods. The disruptions highlighted the ongoing challenges of balancing security needs with daily commuter convenience in the heart of Delhi.
