Delhi Police Refutes Claims of Surge in Missing Persons Cases, Calls Reports Rumors
The Delhi Police has categorically denied reports circulating about more than 500 women and girls going missing from the national capital in the first 15 days of January 2026, labeling such claims as "rumors" and asserting that there has been no significant rise in missing persons incidents when compared to previous years. In an official statement released on Thursday, the police sought to allay public fears and clarify the situation.
Official Statement and Video Message from Joint Commissioner
Sanjay Tyagi, the Joint Commissioner of Police and Public Relations Officer for Delhi Police, addressed the issue through a video message that was shared on the official X account of the Delhi Police. In his communication, Tyagi emphasized that there is "no need to panic" over the rumors being spread regarding missing persons, particularly concerning the disappearance of children. He further claimed that, contrary to the alarming reports, there has actually been a decline in missing persons cases in Delhi during 2026 as compared to earlier years.
Contradiction with Reported Data and Police Response
This statement from the Delhi Police comes in response to a PTI report that cited official police data, indicating that a total of 807 individuals went missing in Delhi from January 1 to January 15, 2026. According to that data:
- On average, 54 people were reported missing each day in the city.
- Out of the total, 509 were women and girls, while 298 were men.
- Among all missing persons, 191 were minors and 616 were adults.
Despite these figures, the Delhi Police has dismissed the data as incorrect, although they have not provided any updated or alternative statistics to counter the claims. This lack of specific numbers has left some questions unanswered regarding the actual situation on the ground.
Police Procedures and Initiatives for Missing Persons
The Delhi Police has reiterated its commitment to an impartial and transparent crime reporting policy. They have outlined multiple avenues for reporting missing persons, including:
- Visiting the local police station in person.
- Utilizing online platforms for filing reports.
- Contacting the Emergency Response Support System via the number 112.
In all missing persons cases, the police follow strict standard operating procedures (SOPs), with immediate efforts launched to trace the individuals. Cases involving children are given the highest priority to ensure swift action. To enhance efficiency, dedicated missing persons squads have been deployed across all districts in Delhi, and the Crime Branch's Anti Human Trafficking Unit handles these cases specifically.
Appeal to the Public and Warning Against Misinformation
In light of the rumors, the Delhi Police has made a public appeal, urging citizens to remain calm but vigilant. They have advised people not to pay heed to unverified information spreading on social media and have warned of legal actions against those found guilty of disseminating misinformation. The police have also encouraged the public to report missing persons cases promptly and share factual information with authorities to aid in investigations, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in maintaining safety and order.
