Delhi Police Honors Courageous Businessman Assaulted for Confronting Harassers
In a commendable act of public service, Delhi Police has officially felicitated a local businessman who endured a brutal assault after he intervened to stop the harassment of women in the Mehrauli area. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, highlights both the risks faced by good Samaritans and the ongoing challenges of public safety in urban settings.
Bravery Recognized with Memento and Certificate
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan personally visited the residence of the victim, Mukesh Singh, to honor him with a memento and a certificate. This gesture was in recognition of his fearless actions in stopping the accused from harassing women, despite being heavily outnumbered and aware of the severe personal danger involved.
"Despite being outnumbered and fully aware of the serious personal risk involved, Mukesh fearlessly confronted the offenders and stood firmly against their unlawful and indecent actions," stated DCP Chauhan during the felicitation ceremony. The police also recorded statements from three women who confirmed that they were being harassed by the accused, adding credibility to Mukesh's account and underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Victim's Account of the Harrowing Incident
Speaking to the media, Mukesh Singh recounted the terrifying events that unfolded around 5 a.m. on Monday. He was returning from a wedding function in Rohini when he stopped at a tea stall and witnessed the four men speaking inappropriately to a young woman. "I just told them it was not right to talk to girls that way and that what they were saying was wrong. I only said this, then one of them came from behind and hit me. I don't remember clearly what happened after that," he explained, detailing the sudden and violent turn of events.
Severe Injuries and Legal Action Taken
The assault left Mukesh with significant injuries, as confirmed by his brother, Rinku. He received 10 stitches on his head and suffered a fractured bone near his eye after being attacked with bricks. Family members reported that doctors have informed them his recovery is expected to take several months, with his face swollen and pain throughout his body. "We don't know who the attackers were," Rinku added, expressing the family's distress and uncertainty in the aftermath.
In response, police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 79, which addresses words, gestures, or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman. This legal step underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating the harassment and subsequent assault.
Arrests Made and Accused Identified
A senior police officer confirmed that all four attackers have been apprehended. They have been identified as Vishal Rawat, Jatin (20), Sonu (25), and Vivek (20). Their swift arrest demonstrates the police's commitment to addressing such crimes and ensuring justice for victims like Mukesh Singh, who risked his own safety to protect others from harassment.
Mukesh, who lives with his wife and two children, now faces a long road to recovery, but his bravery has not gone unnoticed. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise from standing up against wrongdoing, while also highlighting the importance of community support and law enforcement recognition in fostering a safer society.
