Delhi Businessman Severely Beaten After Confronting Harassers in Mehrauli
In a disturbing incident in south Delhi's Mehrauli area, a young businessman was brutally assaulted by a group of men after he courageously intervened to stop them from harassing three women. The attack occurred on Monday night, leaving the victim with serious injuries that required urgent medical attention at multiple hospitals.
Details of the Harassment and Subsequent Attack
Mukesh Kumar, a 26-year-old transport business owner residing in Sangam Vihar with his family, was returning home late after attending a wedding at his maternal uncle's house. While most family members had already returned, Mukesh decided to stop at a tea stall on IGNOU Road around midnight.
At the stall, he encountered four young men who were allegedly making lewd remarks and harassing three women present at the location. According to police sources, Mukesh asked the men to stop their inappropriate behavior, which angered them and led to a verbal confrontation that quickly escalated into physical violence.
Brutal Assault Captured on Video
The attackers allegedly knocked Mukesh to the ground and began beating him mercilessly, even throwing stones at him during the assault. A video circulating on social media shows the horrifying attack occurring at a street corner, with the assailants continuing to kick Mukesh even after he lost consciousness.
In the footage, some attackers can be seen restraining the victim while others beat him, tearing his clothes and thrashing him repeatedly. Another clip shows Mukesh lying on the ground with visible bloodstains on his clothing. An elderly man attempted to intervene during the attack, particularly when one assailant tried to hit Mukesh with bricks.
Police Response and Medical Treatment
Police received a PCR call about the attack on February 3 near Anupam Apartments on IGNOU Road. A team from the local police station immediately responded to the scene. Bystanders had already rushed to help the victim before police arrival.
Mukesh was first admitted to Pt Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital for urgent treatment and was later shifted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre due to the severity of his injuries. Medical professionals are monitoring his condition closely as he recovers from the traumatic assault.
Legal Action and Arrests
Police have registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including:
- Section 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide)
- Section 79 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman)
- Section 126(2) (wrongful restraint)
- Section 3(5) (common intention)
A senior police officer confirmed that all four attackers have been arrested and identified as Vishal Rawat, Jatin (20), Sonu (25), and Vivek (20). The prompt police action led to their apprehension, and investigations are ongoing to determine if there were any additional factors or motives behind the attack.
Community Impact and Safety Concerns
This incident has raised serious concerns about public safety in the area, particularly regarding the harassment of women in public spaces. The bravery shown by Mukesh in confronting the harassers highlights the need for more citizens to stand up against such behavior, while also underscoring the risks involved when individuals intervene in potentially dangerous situations.
Local residents have expressed alarm about the violent nature of the attack and are calling for increased police patrols in the Mehrauli area, especially during late hours. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced in ensuring women's safety in public spaces across Delhi.
