Tragic Hit-and-Run in Delhi Claims Life of 14-Year-Old Boy
A devastating hit-and-run incident in southeast Delhi has resulted in the death of a 14-year-old boy, Mohammad Ahmad, nine days after the crash. The tragic event occurred in the Hazrat Nizamuddin area, leaving the local community in shock and raising serious concerns about road safety.
Details of the Fatal Accident
According to police reports, the incident took place late on March 23. Ahmad, a resident of Nizamuddin Basti, was returning home with his mother Khatija and 16-year-old cousin Zoya after visiting the Eid fair at Red Fort. The trio had just disembarked from an autorickshaw near a petrol pump in Nizamuddin East around 11:20 pm when they attempted to cross the road.
A speeding car struck them as they were crossing, causing severe injuries to all three victims. Ahmad suffered catastrophic brain injuries that ultimately proved fatal. His mother Khatija and cousin Zoya remain in critical condition and are currently undergoing intensive medical treatment at a local hospital.
Family's Heartbreaking Account
Khatija's sister, who had dropped the family off and lives near Ashram, provided a chilling account of the moments before the accident. "Since the signal was red at the traffic intersection, I told them to cross the road," she recalled. "The car hit them right after I left in the auto."
The emotional toll on the family has been immense. Sajid, the father of the deceased boy, expressed his profound grief: "My son is gone. Now what purpose do I have for being alive?" The father of the injured girl Zoya added his own anguish: "My daughter has multiple fractures and I am paralysed. I don't know what to do."
Police Investigation Faces Significant Challenges
Authorities have registered a case at the Hazrat Nizamuddin police station, but the investigation has encountered substantial obstacles. Police officials revealed that tracing the vehicle has been particularly difficult due to two critical factors:
- The absence of functional CCTV cameras in the immediate vicinity of the accident
- Poor lighting conditions at the time of the incident
A relative of the victims provided additional context, suggesting that the car came from the Nizamuddin side via the DPS flyover, struck the victims in Nizamuddin West, and then fled toward New Friends Colony. "One of their mobile phones flew onto the bonnet of the car and was later found in Kalindi Kunj by a security guard," the relative disclosed.
Progress in the Investigation
Despite the challenges, police investigators have made some headway. An officer involved in the case stated that they have narrowed down the suspected vehicle to a red Honda Brio that was traveling from the Mathura Road side, based on available inputs and witness accounts.
The officer explained further: "Footage from nearby stretches has been sent for enhancement and analysis to identify the registration number and trace the driver." The investigation has also revealed that an underpass was located close to the accident site, which may have played a role in the vehicle's escape route.
This tragic incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety infrastructure in Delhi, particularly regarding adequate lighting and functional surveillance systems in residential areas. The community awaits further developments in the police investigation as the search for the responsible driver continues.
