Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Two Young BTech Graduates on Delhi-Dehradun Expressway
In a heartbreaking incident, two BTech graduates from Delhi lost their lives in a fatal road accident on the Delhi-Dehradun Greenfield Expressway. The tragedy occurred near Mavikalan village in Baghpat district during the early hours of Wednesday, around 1 am.
Details of the Fatal Collision
According to police reports, the victims were traveling in a car that was being guided by Google Maps. In a devastating turn of events, their vehicle rammed into a cemented barrier placed on a section of the expressway that has not yet been opened to the public. Following this initial impact, another car crashed into their damaged vehicle, compounding the severity of the accident.
Upon receiving information about the crash, police personnel swiftly reached the spot. They worked to clear the vehicles from the road and have initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Victims Identified as Recent Graduates
The victims have been identified as Kapil Parashar, aged 24, a resident of Nangloi in Delhi, and his friend Prayagraj Kaushik, aged 25, also from Delhi. Both young men had recently completed their BTech degrees from a private university located in Haryana.
Rajan Kaushik, the father of Prayagraj and an official with NITI Aayog in Delhi, shared poignant details about their final journey. "After attending their college convocation on Tuesday, the two friends planned a visit to the Mahdev temple in Haridwar to seek blessings," he said. "They failed to notice the temporary cemented barricades that were placed on the road without any warning signs or proper signage. Their vehicle collided with the obstruction, leading to this tragic outcome."
Allegations of Negligence and Safety Concerns
Rajan Kaushik expressed deep anguish and pointed to systemic failures. "If the road is still under construction, there should be proper diversions in place. I have lost my son due to the negligence of the system," he stated, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety measures on such infrastructure projects.
Suraj Rai, the Superintendent of Police, provided further context regarding the expressway. "The Delhi-Dehradun Greenfield Expressway passes through Baghpat, where designated entry and exit points have been established for vehicles. The stretch between Delhi and Baghpat is already open to the public, but the road beyond this point is closed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) using cemented barriers," he explained.
Rai added, "It appears that the driver of the car failed to notice the barriers due to drizzling conditions and low visibility at the time. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. No formal police complaint has been filed so far, but an investigation is actively underway."
Background on the Delhi-Dehradun Greenfield Expressway
This tragic incident casts a shadow over the much-anticipated Delhi-Dehradun Greenfield Expressway. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate this major infrastructure project on April 14, 2026, in Saharanpur. Authorities have claimed that the 210-kilometer-long expressway will significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and Dehradun, cutting it down to approximately 2.5 hours from the current 5 to 6 hours.
The accident underscores critical safety issues that must be addressed as construction progresses, ensuring that such tragedies are prevented in the future.
