Four Injured in Dehradun MUV Rampage on Busy Rajpur Road
In a shocking incident that unfolded late on Thursday evening, at least four people sustained injuries after a Uttarakhand-registered Multi-Utility Vehicle (MUV) went on a destructive spree on Dehradun's congested Rajpur Road and Old Survey Road. The chaotic episode, which occurred under the jurisdiction of the Dalanwala police station, left a trail of damaged vehicles and property before the driver was finally detained by authorities.
Eyewitness Accounts Describe Terrifying Scene
According to eyewitness reports, the accused driver was operating the MUV in a reckless manner when he collided with several commuters, primarily those on two-wheelers. The mayhem only came to a halt after the vehicle violently rammed into a residential house on Old Survey Road, breaking through the main gate in the process.
Sunil Chhabra, the homeowner, provided a detailed account of the terrifying moments. "I was in my bedroom when I heard a loud bang as if an earthquake had hit our house," Chhabra told TOI. "We rushed to our terrace to check and saw a white car stuck to the wall of our living room after uprooting the heavy metal entrance gate of the house. From the terrace itself, I saw two persons lying on the narrow road in front of our house with people gathering near them."
Property Damage and Swift Police Response
Chhabra expressed relief that no family members were injured, but confirmed that significant damage was inflicted on the property. "Before coming to a halt, the accused had completely uprooted our entrance gate and then sandwiched our parked car and a scooter with the house's outer wall," he explained.
The homeowner later learned that the MUV had previously struck three more individuals on two-wheelers before hitting the two victims who were found motionless in front of his residence. Demonstrating quick thinking, Chhabra immediately called for an ambulance to transport the injured to the hospital.
"The accused had abandoned his car and fled the scene only to be nabbed by a motorbike-borne police unit after a few metres from the crime spot," Chhabra revealed, adding that he subsequently filed a formal complaint at the nearby police station.
Official Police Statement and Investigation
Dalanwala Station House Officer Santosh Kunwar confirmed the basic details of the incident, stating that at least four injured individuals had been rushed to the hospital for urgent medical treatment. "The accused has been detained and is being questioned," SHO Kunwar stated, indicating that a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the dangerous driving episode is currently underway.
The incident, which occurred around 8:15 PM when the Chhabra family was inside their home, has raised serious concerns about road safety on Dehradun's busy thoroughfares. Authorities are expected to examine whether factors such as speeding, intoxication, or mechanical failure contributed to the driver's loss of control.
