Dalit Youth Brutally Attacked in Bhadohi, Loses Vision in Left Eye After Canal Dispute

In a shocking incident of caste-based violence, a Dalit youth in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi district has lost sight in his left eye after being brutally assaulted following an argument over defecating near a canal. Police confirmed the attack on Monday, detailing the horrific escalation of a seemingly minor dispute into a life-altering assault.

Victim in Critical Condition, Referred to Varanasi for Advanced Treatment

The victim, identified as Rahul, who is in his early twenties, was initially treated at the district hospital before being referred in critical condition to Varanasi on Sunday for advanced medical care. The incident, which occurred on Friday afternoon in the Aurai area, began when Rahul went to a canal to relieve himself.

An argument erupted with the accused, Shankar Bind, who objected to Rahul defecating near the canal. According to police reports, the dispute quickly escalated as Bind allegedly hurled caste-based slurs at Rahul before launching a violent physical assault.

Motorcycle Key Used as Weapon in Brutal Eye Attack

Superintendent of Police Abhimanyu Manglik provided chilling details of the attack. "When Rahul tried to escape, the accused allegedly pierced a motorcycle key in his left eye and threatened to kill him," Manglik stated. "The victim collapsed on the ground in severe pain as a result of this brutal assault."

The attacker fled the scene as local residents gathered. Police arrived after receiving information about the incident and initially shifted Rahul to a community health center before he was admitted to the district hospital for more comprehensive treatment.

Severe Eye Injury Leads to Loss of Vision

"As the injury to his left eye was severe, and he complained of loss of vision, doctors on Sunday referred him to the BHU Trauma Centre in Varanasi," Manglik added, emphasizing the gravity of the medical situation.

Legal Action Initiated Under Multiple Laws

The victim's father, Ram Dhani, has registered a formal complaint against Shankar Bind. A case has been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, highlighting the caste dimension of the attack.

"Necessary legal action against the accused is being taken, and further investigation is underway," the Superintendent of Police confirmed, indicating that authorities are pursuing the case with appropriate seriousness.

Broader Implications of the Incident

This violent incident underscores ongoing concerns about caste-based discrimination and violence in parts of Uttar Pradesh. What began as a dispute over sanitation access escalated into a brutal assault with permanent physical consequences for the victim.

The case has drawn attention to the implementation of laws designed to protect marginalized communities from atrocities, with authorities now tasked with ensuring justice is served in this particularly violent manifestation of caste prejudice.
