Tragic Workplace Accident Claims Life of Daily Wager in Karnataka
In a devastating incident highlighting workplace safety lapses, a 40-year-old daily wager lost his life after an electricity pole fell on him in Belthangady, Karnataka. The victim, identified as Shivappa, was working at an electrical establishment when the tragic accident occurred on Monday evening.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The accident took place near the Kokkada Sri Rama Bhajana Mandir in Kokkada village. According to a police complaint filed by Ranjith, 23, who is Shivappa's nephew, the victim had been employed as a daily wager for the past six years at an electrical business owned by Purushottama, a resident of Kokkada.
It is alleged that while carrying out work involving the lifting of electric poles, the employer failed to provide necessary safety equipment and did not implement adequate precautionary measures. During the operation, an electric pole reportedly fell directly on Shivappa, causing severe injuries that proved fatal on the spot.
Police Investigation Underway
Based on the formal complaint, authorities at the Dharmasthala police station have registered a case under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). An investigation is currently in progress to determine the exact circumstances and potential negligence leading to this preventable death.
This incident raises serious concerns about:
- Workplace safety standards for daily wage laborers
- Employer responsibility in hazardous work environments
- Implementation of safety protocols in electrical work
- Legal accountability under the new BNS provisions
The local community has been shaken by this tragedy, which underscores the vulnerabilities faced by daily wage workers in India's informal sector. As the investigation continues, questions remain about whether proper safety measures could have prevented this loss of life.
