A tragic incident in Cuddalore district has claimed the life of a one-and-a-half-year-old boy after he fell into an overflowing stormwater drain. The accident occurred on Monday in front of the child's home in Keezhpathi village, located in the Srimushnam taluk.
A Tragic Afternoon Turns Fatal
The deceased has been identified as P Sai Rakshan, the young son of Palanivel, a 40-year-old fisherman from the village. At the time of the incident, the boy's father was away on a pilgrimage to Sabarimala. The child was at home with his mother, P Deepa, 34, and his three-and-a-half-year-old elder brother, Sai Lokesh.
The two siblings were reportedly watching the stormwater drain, which was overflowing due to recent rains, in front of their house. In a moment of tragic misfortune, little Sai Rakshan accidentally slipped and fell into the fast-moving water. He was immediately swept away by the current.
Desperate Rescue Efforts and Recovery
Upon being alerted by his older brother, the mother, Deepa, was informed that Sai Rakshan had fallen into the drain. Neighbours quickly rallied to help and called the fire and rescue services. A team rushed to the spot and began a frantic search along the drain's path.
The rescue personnel managed to retrieve the toddler approximately 50 meters away from his house. A firefighter immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in a valiant attempt to revive the boy. He was then rushed to a nearby primary health centre. However, the doctor on duty declared that the baby was 'brought dead', dashing all hopes of survival.
Police Investigation and Community Grief
Following the heartbreaking event, the Cholatharam police have registered a case. The investigation has been initiated under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which pertains to police inquiry and report on suicide or other suspicious deaths. The local community in Keezhpathi village is in a state of profound shock and mourning over the sudden loss of the young child.

It serves as a grim reminder for authorities and communities to ensure proper safety measures and covers for such infrastructure to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
