CRPF CoBRA Jawan Injured in IED Blast During Combing Operation in Saranda Forest

In a distressing incident on Monday, a CRPF CoBRA jawan sustained injuries after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in the dense Saranda forest located in West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand. The injured personnel has been identified as Anuj Kumar, who serves with the 205 Battalion of the elite CoBRA unit.

Details of the Explosion and Rescue Efforts

The explosion occurred during an intensive combing operation along the Chadra Dera stretch near Baliba village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Chotanagra police station. According to police reports, Kumar accidentally stepped on the IED, triggering the blast that resulted in his injuries. Prompt action was taken as he was airlifted to a hospital in Ranchi for urgent medical treatment. Authorities have confirmed that his condition remains stable, providing some relief amid the tense situation.

Recovery and Neutralization of Additional IED

Following the initial blast, security forces discovered a live IED at the same site. The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) was immediately called in to handle the explosive device, which was successfully neutralized to prevent any further threats. This discovery underscores the persistent dangers faced by security personnel in the region, known for its history of left-wing extremism.

Investigation and Heightened Security Measures

West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police, Amit Renu, addressed the media, stating that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the origin of the IED. "Further investigation will reveal whether the IED was planted recently or if it was part of an earlier stock planted by Maoists in the past," he explained. In response to the incident, SP Renu announced that search operations have been intensified across the area to enhance security and prevent similar occurrences.

The Saranda forest, spanning parts of Jharkhand, has long been a hotspot for Maoist activities, making such combing operations critical for maintaining law and order. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges in combating extremism and ensuring the safety of security forces engaged in these high-risk missions.
