Chamarajanagar Court Mandates Community Service for Non-Cooperation in Cyber Crime Inquiry

A court in Chamarajanagar has issued a directive ordering a man to undertake community service at the local Cyber Crime police station as a consequence for his failure to cooperate during a verification inquiry into a suspected mule account. This case underscores the judicial system's firm stance on ensuring compliance with law enforcement procedures in cybercrime investigations.

Incident Details and Police Action

According to an official press release from the Department of Information and Public Relations, the incident unfolded when Anand, a resident of Kottalavadi village in Chamarajanagar taluk and an employee at a private company, appeared before the Cyber Crime police station along with his mother on Wednesday. He was summoned as part of a district-wide verification drive targeting mule accounts, which are bank accounts exploited by cybercriminal networks to receive and transfer illicit funds.

The verification exercise is being conducted across the district under the directives of the Director General of Police (Cyber Command Wing). As part of this initiative, police personnel contacted Anand's mother and instructed her to appear at the station with all relevant documents for the inquiry.

Alleged Unruly Behavior and Legal Proceedings

During the inquiry, Anand allegedly behaved in an unruly manner, speaking loudly and irrelevantly, and refused to provide proper documentation related to the suspected mule account. He also allegedly failed to cooperate with police officers during the verification process. Police summoned his mother to record her statement, as the mule account in question was opened in her name, according to the release.

Following his conduct, a petty case was registered against him under the provisions of the Karnataka Police Act, 1965. A chargesheet was subsequently submitted before the court, detailing the allegations and evidence.

Court Order and Community Service Requirements

Hearing the matter, the Civil Judge (Senior Division) and Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) ordered Anand to undertake community service at the Cyber Crime police station for two days. As per the court order, he must assist police personnel between 10 AM and 5 PM by courteously receiving visitors, guiding them, and helping in recording statements of mule account holders.

This judicial decision serves as a reminder of the importance of cooperation with law enforcement agencies, especially in sensitive areas like cybercrime, where timely and accurate information is crucial for preventing financial fraud and protecting citizens.
