Violent Protests Erupt in Cooch Behar After Minor Girl's Alleged Rape

In a disturbing incident that has shaken West Bengal's Cooch Behar district, violent protests erupted in Mekhliganj following the alleged rape of a minor girl. The situation escalated dramatically over the weekend, resulting in injuries to police personnel and multiple arrests.

Arrests Made Amidst Escalating Tensions

According to police officials, nine individuals have been arrested in connection with the case and subsequent violence. The primary accused, an elderly man allegedly involved in the rape incident, was apprehended on Saturday night under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Additionally, eight more people were arrested for allegedly attacking police personnel and obstructing official duties during the protests that turned violent on Saturday evening.

Details of the Alleged Crime

Local sources revealed that the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon when the minor girl visited a riverside area near her residence. The elderly man reportedly threatened her with a sharp weapon before committing the alleged sexual assault. The situation was interrupted when a woman arrived at the scene and rescued the victim.

Despite facing threats from the accused, the girl's family demonstrated courage by filing a formal police complaint. However, local residents expressed dissatisfaction with what they perceived as delayed police action in making the arrest.

Protests Turn Violent

The simmering tensions boiled over on Saturday night when angry locals took to the streets. Protesters blocked roads and set tires ablaze at the local market area, demanding the death penalty for the arrested man.

When police personnel arrived at the scene to control the situation, they reportedly faced stone-pelting from the agitated crowd. The violence resulted in injuries to the officer-in-charge of the local police station, prompting law enforcement to resort to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the protesters.

Area Remains Tense with 12-Hour Shutdown

In response to the incident and subsequent developments, locals have called for a 12-hour shutdown in the affected area. The protest action has led to the closure of shops and markets, significantly impacting normal life in Mekhliganj.

The situation remains tense with heightened police presence in the region. A police contingent led by Tanmay Mukherjee, Additional Superintendent of Police from Mathabhanga, has been deployed for patrolling and maintaining law and order.

Official Statement and Investigation

Speaking to reporters, Additional Superintendent Tanmay Mukherjee confirmed the developments. "We have received a complaint regarding the rape incident. Based on that, one person has been arrested under the Pocso Act. Additionally, eight others have been arrested for obstructing police work and attacking police personnel," he stated.

The police have assured that thorough investigations are underway regarding the allegations against the arrested elderly man. The case has drawn significant attention in the region, highlighting concerns about women's safety and the promptness of law enforcement response to such serious crimes.
