Contractor Arrested Following Fatal Sewage Tank Incident in Coimbatore
The Saibaba Colony police in Coimbatore have taken swift action by arresting a contractor, J Prabhakaran, 43, of Vinayagapuram, in connection with a tragic accident that claimed the lives of two workers. The incident occurred at a sewage treatment plant, where the victims fell into a deep tank on Friday evening.
Details of the Tragic Accident
On Friday around 5 pm, two workers, G Arjun Kumar, 38, from Rathinapuri, and S Suresh Kumar, 27, from Pappampatti, were engaged in fixing a motor at the sewage treatment plant. According to police sources, Arjun Kumar accidentally slipped and fell into the 40-foot-deep tank, which contained approximately 15 feet of waste. In a desperate attempt to rescue his colleague, Suresh Kumar also fell into the tank, leading to both fatalities.
The fire and rescue services personnel worked through the night and recovered the bodies around 2 am on Saturday. The Saibaba Colony police have registered a case against contractor Prabhakaran under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to causing death by negligence, highlighting the serious nature of the incident.
Compensation and Welfare Measures Announced
In response to the tragedy, Thippampatti V Aruchamy, chairman of the Tamil Nadu Cleanliness Workers Welfare Board, visited the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital to pay his respects to the deceased. He confirmed that efforts are underway to secure the Rs 10 lakh compensation announced by Chief Minister M K Stalin for the families of the victims. Additionally, the contractor has agreed to provide Rs 30 lakh each to the families of Arjun Kumar and Suresh Kumar.
Aruchamy noted that due to the model code of conduct currently in effect, the government is unable to assure jobs for the kin of the deceased workers at this time. This has sparked further discussions on support mechanisms for affected families.
Calls for Enhanced Safety and Legal Action
AITUC state vice-president N Selvaraj has demanded stricter measures in the wake of the accident. He called for the state government to provide Rs 50 lakh compensation to each family and emphasized the need for a stringent case against the contractor, along with legal punishment. Selvaraj also stressed the importance of training workers on the use of safety gear and implementing robust safety protocols during such hazardous tasks to prevent future incidents.
Political figures have also shown concern, with Coimbatore South constituency DMK candidate and former minister V Senthil Balaji visiting the accident site on Friday night to assess the situation and express solidarity with the victims' families.
This incident underscores critical issues regarding workplace safety in industrial settings, particularly in sewage treatment plants, and has prompted calls for improved regulations and accountability to protect workers' lives.
