Chandigarh: Congress Lok Sabha member from Gurdaspur, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, on Saturday expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Chandigarh, following a firing incident at a medical store in Sector 11, in which a cashier lost his life.
Randhawa said that the tragic incident comes on the heels of a grenade attack on the BJP office and a series of violent crimes that had shaken public confidence in the safety and security of the Union Territory.
Direct Control Under Centre
"Chandigarh is not governed by a state government. It is directly under the administrative control of the Union home ministry headed by Amit Shah. When such serious incidents occur repeatedly in a city that is under the direct supervision of the Centre, the Union home minister must answer for these failures," said Randhawa.
Questioning Double-Engine Government
He questioned the BJP's repeated claims regarding the effectiveness of its "double-engine government" model. "If the Union home minister cannot ensure the safety of citizens in Chandigarh, a city directly controlled by his own administration, what credibility remains in the BJP's claims of strong governance and efficient law enforcement?" he asked.
Randhawa stated that the recent incidents indicated a worrying decline in public security and called upon the Union government to take immediate corrective measures. He demanded a comprehensive review of Chandigarh's policing and intelligence mechanisms and sought accountability from officials responsible for maintaining law and order.
