Coimbatore Railway Police Bust Major Ganja Smuggling Operation
In a significant crackdown, the government railway police in Coimbatore made a major seizure on Tuesday. They confiscated a substantial quantity of ganja from an express train. The operation led to the arrest of three individuals from West Bengal. Authorities charged them with smuggling the illegal substance.
Special Team Boards Vivek Express
A dedicated team of Coimbatore railway police sprang into action on Tuesday afternoon. They boarded the Vivek Express train, which travels from Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari. The team entered the train at Tirupur railway station. They immediately began a thorough search of passengers' luggage.
The police discovered the ganja in an unreserved general compartment of the train. The search yielded a total of 55 kilograms of the contraband. This discovery prompted further investigation into the matter.
Three Suspects Apprehended
Inquiries following the seizure identified three suspects. S Palash Mondal, aged 24, N Mithun Sarkar, aged 26, and D Rohit Das, aged 25, all hail from Murshidabad in West Bengal. Police investigations revealed their involvement in smuggling ganja from West Bengal. Their intended destination for selling the drugs was Coimbatore.
The trio faced immediate arrest at the scene. Police took them into custody along with the seized ganja.
Case Transferred to Special Bureau
Authorities handed over the arrested individuals and the confiscated ganja to the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau - Criminal Investigation Department. The bureau registered a formal case based on the evidence. They have now initiated detailed investigations into the smuggling network.
This operation highlights the vigilance of railway police in combating drug trafficking. It underscores their commitment to intercepting illegal substances before they reach urban markets.
