In a significant crackdown on narcotics, the Coimbatore City Police apprehended eight individuals allegedly involved in drug peddling and confiscated a substantial quantity of cannabis during a series of targeted raids conducted on Sunday.

Major Haul in Coordinated Operation

Acting on specific intelligence and as part of a broader directive to curb the supply and consumption of illegal substances within the city, police teams from multiple stations, along with personnel from the prohibition enforcement wing, carried out simultaneous searches at various locations. The operation led to the seizure of approximately 5 kilograms of ganja (cannabis).

Identities of the Accused Revealed

The police have identified the eight arrested individuals. From Ukkadam, the arrested are K Safeeq (29), S Sanja Thalim (29), and P Jayaprakash (48). A Sekar (38) was arrested from Kuniyamuthur, while A Nowfal (25) and N Hari Prasanth (28) were taken into custody from Selvapuram. T Akilan (22) was arrested from Chokkampudur, and V Vijayakumar (32) from Podanur.

Legal Action and Custody

All the accused have been formally charged under the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Following their arrest, they were presented before a local court, which subsequently ordered them to be remanded in judicial custody.

This coordinated effort underscores the police department's focused campaign against the drug trade in the region. The successful raids and subsequent arrests are expected to disrupt local supply chains and serve as a deterrent to those involved in such illicit activities.
