Chhattisgarh DSP Suspended Over Alleged Misconduct and Financial Irregularities

A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) posted in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district has been suspended by the state government, following serious allegations of misconduct and financial impropriety. The suspension order cites "conduct unbecoming of a civil servant" and involves a complaint from a businessman who claims losses of Rs 2 crore due to the officer's actions.

Background of the Complaint

On December 16, businessman Deepak Tondon submitted a written complaint to Chhattisgarh Director General of Police Arun Dev Gautam, targeting DSP Kalpana Verma. Tondon alleged that he had been acquainted with Verma, her father, and brother for five years, and that she misused her influential position to cause him significant financial harm, amounting to approximately Rs 2 crore.

Investigation and Suspension Details

A senior police officer confirmed that an inquiry was initiated against DSP Verma based on the complaint. The suspension, effective immediately, was ordered under Rule-9 of the Chhattisgarh Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1966. The preliminary investigation report highlighted several concerning findings:

  • Financial transactions that raised red flags.
  • Contradictions between statements given during the investigation and evidence from WhatsApp chats.
  • Allegations of obtaining illegal financial gains while on duty.
  • Misuse of her official post for personal benefit.
  • Acquisition of disproportionate assets beyond known sources of income.

The officer stated, "She was suspended as her conduct as an officer was unbecoming of a civil servant. This includes WhatsApp chats and the sharing of sensitive information that should not have been shared." The suspension order explicitly notes that these acts violate Rule-3 of the Chhattisgarh Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1965.

Consequences and Current Status

During the suspension period, DSP Verma's headquarters have been designated as the Police Headquarters in Nava Raipur, Atal Nagar. She will receive a subsistence allowance as per applicable rules. Attempts to contact Verma for comment were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to calls or text messages from media outlets.

This case underscores ongoing efforts to maintain accountability within the police force and civil services in Chhattisgarh, particularly in regions like Dantewada, which has faced various challenges related to governance and security.
