A 25-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly pushing a college student off the rooftop of her house in Chennai after she repeatedly rejected his romantic advances. The victim, identified as Sharmila, sustained severe injuries and is fighting for her life in a private hospital's intensive care unit.
Months of Stalking Culminate in Brutal Attack
The incident occurred on Sunday night in the Nerkundram area near Maduravoyal. According to police, the accused, Silambarasan, a native of Ariyalur district, had been obsessively following the second-year BCom student for two to three months. Despite Sharmila's clear and repeated refusals to his persistent 'love proposals', he continued to stalk her.
On the fateful night, Sharmila was on the terrace of her home collecting clothes. Silambarasan, who was in an inebriated state, reportedly climbed onto her rooftop from a neighbouring building. In a sudden and violent act, he pushed her off the terrace with the alleged intention of killing her.
Neighbours Nab Attacker, Victim Battles Injuries
Alert neighbours who witnessed the horrifying act immediately rushed to the scene. They managed to apprehend the drunk attacker and subsequently handed him over to the Koyambedu police. Their swift intervention likely prevented further harm.
Sharmila suffered multiple serious injuries, including fractures to her hip. She was rushed to a private hospital for emergency treatment, where she remains in the ICU. Her condition is reported to be serious.
Police Investigation and Judicial Custody
Police inquiries confirmed that Silambarasan had been stalking the young woman for several months following her initial rejection. Based on the complaint, a case was registered, and a thorough investigation is ongoing.
The accused has been remanded to judicial custody. The police are delving deeper into the case to understand the full sequence of events and the accused's history.
This shocking incident has once again highlighted the extreme dangers of stalking and the fatal consequences that can arise when obsession turns violent, underscoring the urgent need for robust protective measures for women.
