According to police reports, around 10:30 PM, a group of people approached the shopkeeper, identified as Subhash, at his establishment near the Anna-MGR mausoleum area. The individuals presented themselves as office-bearers of the Marina Beach traders' association and demanded a weekly payment of 100 rupees as a mandatory subscription fee.
When Subhash firmly refused to comply with their unlawful demand, the situation escalated rapidly. The group immediately turned violent, ransacking his shop and attacking him with a crowbar. The assailants caused significant damage to the property while inflicting serious injuries on the shopkeeper during the assault.
