Chennai Police Arrest Prime Suspect in Assam Teen's Rape Case
In a distressing incident highlighting vulnerabilities faced by migrant workers, a 16-year-old girl from Assam was allegedly raped by two of her co-workers in Chennai. The Neelankarai all-women police station has taken swift action, arresting the prime suspect and launching an intensive manhunt for the second accused.
Details of the Alleged Assault
According to police reports, the survivor arrived in Chennai approximately six months ago to work for a private company located in the Neelankarai area. There, she befriended a 19-year-old co-worker named Ruben, who is also originally from Assam and employed by the same organization.
The investigation reveals that Ruben invited the teenage girl to his residence in Kottivakkam under false pretenses. Once there, he allegedly threatened her and committed sexual assault. The ordeal did not end there. A few days following this initial incident, Ruben reportedly coerced the victim into engaging in sexual acts with his friend, identified as 19-year-old Alan Hussain, a native of Nagaland who also works for the same company.
Threats and Intimidation Tactics
Adding a layer of psychological torment to the physical violence, the prime suspect is accused of claiming to have recorded videos of the sexual assaults. Ruben allegedly warned the survivor that he would release these photos and videos on social media platforms if she disclosed the matter to anyone, effectively silencing her through fear and intimidation.
Police Action and Legal Proceedings
Despite the threats, the young survivor later mustered immense courage and approached the Neelankarai all-women police station to lodge a formal complaint. The police have registered a case under the stringent provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, given the victim's minor status.
Law enforcement officials confirmed the arrest of the prime suspect, Ruben, on Wednesday. An intensive search operation is currently underway to locate and apprehend the second accused, Alan Hussain. Further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assaults and the collection of digital evidence is progressing.
This case underscores critical issues regarding the safety and protection of young, inter-state migrant workers in urban centers. It also highlights the importance of specialized police units, like all-women stations, in handling sensitive cases and encouraging survivors to come forward.
