Chandigarh Police Nab Suspect in High-Value Cash Theft from Unlocked Vehicle
In a significant development, the Sector-26 police in Chandigarh have apprehended a 53-year-old man for allegedly stealing a substantial amount of cash from an unlocked car in the bustling Sector-26 grain market area. The accused, identified as Sarwan Kumar, a resident of Industrial Area Phase I, was taken into custody following a swift investigation that relied on CCTV footage and technical surveillance.
Details of the Theft Incident
The incident unfolded on Saturday morning when the complainant, Chaturbhuj of Sector 12, Panchkula, parked his Maruti Omni vehicle near Satsang Bhawan around 9 am. He had stopped briefly to use the washroom but made the critical mistake of forgetting to lock his car. Upon returning, he was shocked to discover that a bag containing a significant sum of money had been stolen from the vehicle.
Chaturbhuj reported to the police that the bag held Rs 4.20 lakh in cash, which was intended for business transactions. The theft prompted an immediate response from law enforcement, who launched a thorough probe into the matter.
Police Investigation and Recovery
Authorities quickly obtained CCTV footage from the vicinity, which captured the suspect arriving on an Activa scooter, seizing the bag, and making a swift escape. Using the scooter's registration number and leveraging technical inputs, the police were able to trace and locate Sarwan Kumar. During the arrest, officers recovered Rs 3.14 lakh in cash along with the scooter allegedly used in the commission of the crime.
Following his arrest, Sarwan Kumar was presented before a court and subsequently remanded to 14-day judicial custody. This legal step ensures he remains in detention as the investigation progresses and further evidence is gathered.
Background of the Accused
Investigators revealed that Sarwan Kumar, who works as a labourer, had previously been employed in the Sector-26 market. This prior connection gave him familiarity with the shopkeeper's daily routines, which he allegedly exploited to plan and execute the theft. Police suspect that he had been monitoring Chaturbhuj's movements before carrying out the brazen act.
