Chandigarh deploys 1,100 cops for New Year's Eve security

In a major security initiative to curb hooliganism and ensure public safety, the Chandigarh Police has announced a massive deployment of over 1,100 police personnel across the city for New Year's Eve. The extensive plan includes traffic restrictions, specialized squads, and enhanced patrolling to manage the celebrations on the night of December 31.

Massive Police Deployment and Traffic Management

The police force will be led by 12 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), 16 Station House Officers (SHOs), and 20 inspectors. A key focus will be on traffic violations and rash driving, with four dedicated DSPs and five inspectors assigned specifically for this purpose. To control the flow of vehicles, the traffic police will establish 16 check posts, while the UT police will set up 44 internal nakas and 18 outer barriers.

Significant traffic restrictions will be in place from 10 PM on December 31 until 2 AM on January 1. The inner markets of Sectors 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 17, and 22 have been declared a "restricted vehicle zone" during this period. The restricted area also includes the road in front of Leisure Valley in Sector 10 and the stretch from Aroma Lightpoint to Small Chowk near the Sector 22 dispensary. Only residents with valid ID proof will be permitted to enter these zones.

Enhanced Safety Measures for Women and Anti-Drunken Driving Checks

Prioritizing women's safety, the police will deploy 20 special women cop squads at key locations including hotels, night clubs, restaurants, and the popular markets of Sectors 17 and 22. In a supportive move, seven PCR vehicles with women police personnel will be stationed at seven prominent spots to offer a free pick-up and drop facility for women throughout the night.

To tackle the menace of drunk driving, multiple anti-drunk driving nakas will be operational across the city. Furthermore, patrolling by PCR vehicles will be intensified, and anti-sabotage teams will be on high alert to prevent any untoward incidents.

Additional Arrangements for Public Convenience

For the convenience of revellers near the busy Elante Mall in Industrial Area Phase-1, the traffic police have implemented a one-way system to ease congestion. Ensuring emergency medical aid is readily available, ambulances will be stationed at six different locations in the city. The comprehensive plan underscores the police department's commitment to allowing citizens to celebrate responsibly while maintaining strict law and order.

The Chandigarh Police's multi-layered strategy aims to preemptively address potential issues of rowdy behaviour, traffic chaos, and safety concerns, ensuring that the New Year celebrations are both joyful and secure for all residents and visitors in the city.
