The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation into the murder of Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The agency has formed a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Pankaj Kumar Singh to probe the case.
Details of the Incident
Chandranath Rath was killed in a deadly ambush in Madhyamgram on May 6. According to reports, gunmen intercepted his SUV and opened fire, resulting in his death. The attack has raised concerns about law and order in the state.
Arrests Made
In a joint interstate operation, three accused have been arrested, including a sharpshooter from Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in the initial phase of the investigation.
The CBI is now probing a possible larger conspiracy behind the killing. The SIT will examine all angles, including potential political motives and links to organized crime.
Investigation Progress
The CBI's involvement comes after the West Bengal government requested a transfer of the case. The SIT will coordinate with local police and other agencies to gather evidence and identify additional suspects.
Officials stated that forensic analysis and witness testimonies are being prioritized. The agency is also reviewing call data records and financial transactions to trace the conspiracy network.
