In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially reopened a chilling, decades-old murder mystery from Kerala. The agency's Thiruvananthapuram unit has filed a fresh First Information Report (FIR) before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Ernakulam, reigniting the investigation into the death of an unidentified woman whose body was discovered in a Malappuram rubber plantation back in 2004.
The Gruesome Discovery and Initial Investigation
On the morning of December 28, 2004, a grim discovery was made in the Puthanangady area of Perinthalmanna. The body of a woman, estimated to be around 35 years old, was found in a rubber plantation located on the eastern side of the Perinthalmanna-Kolathur public road. She was wearing a yellow blouse and a yellow skirt at the time. The local Perinthalmanna police, who registered the case, immediately deemed the circumstances suspicious.
A subsequent postmortem examination provided the tragic cause of death: the woman had been strangled. Despite an investigation that spanned over four years, from December 28, 2004, to March 20, 2009, the Perinthalmanna police hit a dead end. Authorities could neither establish the identity of the victim nor trace any accused. With no leads, the case was ultimately classified as undetected and shelved.
The Long Road to a CBI Probe
The case gathered dust for years until it resurfaced in 2021 through an unexpected petition. A man, claiming his reputation had been damaged because he was questioned and his vehicle seized during the initial probe, filed a writ petition before the Kerala High Court. He specifically sought a CBI investigation into the matter.
Responding to the plea, the case was first transferred to the state Crime Branch in 2022. However, the pursuit for a central agency probe persisted. Finally, on November 20, 2025, the High Court issued an order directing a CBI investigation. This judicial mandate paved the way for the current action by the federal agency.
New Hope for Justice
By re-registering the case and submitting the FIR in court, the CBI has formally taken over the reins of this 21-year-old cold case. The investigation will now be handled by the Special Crime Branch (SCB) of the CBI's Thiruvananthapuram unit. This move brings a renewed sense of hope that advanced investigative techniques and a fresh perspective might finally unravel the mystery surrounding the unidentified woman's death and deliver long-awaited justice.
The CBI's entry marks a critical juncture, emphasizing that no case is truly closed until the truth is uncovered. The agency is now tasked with piecing together evidence from a crime scene that is over two decades old, a challenge they are mandated to overcome.
