CBI Nabs Two Military Engineering Services Officers in Pune Bribery Sting
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made a significant arrest, apprehending two officers from the Military Engineering Services (MES) in Pune on charges of corruption. The officials, identified as an Assistant Garrison Engineer and a Junior Engineer based in Khadki, Pune, were taken into custody for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh.
Details of the Bribery Case
According to a press release issued by the CBI, the case originated from a complaint filed on February 3, 2026. The complainant, who holds a power of attorney for a private company engaged in executing MES contracts, alleged that the accused officers demanded an undue advantage of Rs 6 lakh. It was reported that despite the completion of contractual works and the submission of necessary certificates, payments were deliberately withheld to coerce the bribe payment.
After negotiations, the officers agreed to accept Rs 2 lakh as the first instalment of the bribe. In a meticulously planned operation, a CBI team laid a trap on Thursday, successfully catching the Junior Engineer red-handed while he was allegedly accepting the Rs 2 lakh bribe from the complainant. The bribe amount was promptly recovered from his office premises.
Arrests and Further Investigations
The Assistant Garrison Engineer was also arrested for his alleged involvement in the conspiracy. Following the arrests, the CBI conducted extensive searches at the residential and office premises of the accused. These raids led to the recovery of crucial documents and unexplained cash totaling Rs 1,88,500, adding weight to the corruption allegations.
The CBI has emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, with further probes underway to uncover any additional details or potential accomplices in this case. This incident highlights the agency's continued efforts to combat corruption within government departments, particularly those involved in critical infrastructure projects like the Military Engineering Services.
