The Central Bureau of Investigation has made a significant arrest in Guwahati. The agency detained a person convicted in a corruption case that dates back fourteen years. This individual had been evading authorities for more than a decade.
Details of the Conviction and Arrest
Tamanna Chakma, also known as Tamie May, faced conviction on May 17, 2024. A court in Mizoram found her guilty along with twenty-two other accused persons. The case involved alleged misappropriation of compensation bills.
The original complaint targeted UP Mishra. He served as the zonal manager for the National Projects Construction Corporation Limited in Silchar, Assam. Five other individuals were also named in the complaint.
A Long Legal Process
The trial for this corruption case lasted nearly twelve years. Throughout the proceedings, Tamanna Chakma failed to appear before the trial court. This absence prompted the court to issue an arrest warrant against her.
Even after the court pronounced its judgment, Chakma did not present herself. She remained at large, avoiding the consequences of her conviction.
The CBI's Operation
On Saturday, the CBI's Shillong team finally located and detained Chakma. The arrest took place in Guwahati, within the jurisdiction of the Geeta Nagar police station.
Investigators employed multiple techniques to track her down. They conducted field verification and physical surveillance. A thorough analysis of call detail records also played a crucial role in pinpointing her location.
The CBI officially confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Sunday. This development marks the end of a prolonged manhunt for a convicted individual in a longstanding corruption case.
