In a startling revelation from Ahmedabad, bootleggers have devised a novel modus operandi by repurposing CNG auto rickshaws to conceal illegal liquor. This tactic involves removing the CNG cylinders and installing specially crafted hidden compartments within the vehicle's chassis, allowing for discreet transportation of contraband.
Crime Branch Interception Uncovers Elaborate Scheme
The scheme came to light on Tuesday night when a crime branch team, acting on a tip-off, intercepted a suspicious auto rickshaw during routine patrolling. The team cordoned off a parked vehicle near Pirana, matching the description provided, and detained the driver for further investigation.
Upon inspection, officers discovered that the auto rickshaw, originally designed to run on CNG, had its gas cylinder completely removed. In its place, two secret cavities had been meticulously created along the chassis, housing a total of 240 bottles of liquor. The accused had modified the vehicle to evade detection, as the absence of a visible load made it appear like any regular passenger auto rickshaw.
Strategic Modifications to Avoid Suspicion
Police officials noted that the bootleggers switched the vehicle to petrol instead of CNG, ensuring uninterrupted movement without raising suspicion at fuel stations or during routine checks. This clever adaptation allowed them to operate under the radar, blending in with everyday traffic.
The total value of the seized items, including the liquor, vehicle, and a mobile phone, is estimated to be more than Rs 1 lakh. A case has been registered under the Prohibition Act, and an extensive probe is underway to identify the supply chain and possible accomplices involved in this illicit operation.
