Bomb Threat Emails Target Multiple Schools in Ahmedabad, Disrupting Board Exams
A series of bomb threat emails sent to approximately 23 schools across Ahmedabad city and its rural areas on Wednesday morning caused significant disruption to ongoing board examinations. The threats impacted both Indian Certificate for Secondary Education (ICSE) and Gujarat state board exam centers, triggering immediate police response and sending concerned parents rushing to school gates.
Exam Delays and Security Protocols Activated
Four schools serving as ICSE Class 10 examination centers were forced to delay their geography paper by one hour to allow bomb detection and disposal squads (BDDS) to thoroughly check the premises. Additionally, four state board examination centers faced similar disruptions. Despite the alarming threats, all examinations were eventually conducted without further incident after comprehensive security clearances.
The affected ICSE centers included SGVP International School, Eklavya School, JG International School, and Zydus School for Excellence. These institutions rescheduled their examinations from the original 11 AM slot to 12 noon. Alka Murthy, principal of Zydus School and city convenor for ICSE Class 10 exams, explained that the delay was implemented to ensure students had adequate preparation time and could complete their tests in a secure environment.
"The exams were conducted in a peaceful environment, and no untoward incident was reported," Murthy stated, emphasizing that student safety remained the top priority throughout the situation.
Coordinated Police Response and School Protocols
School authorities immediately activated established security protocols upon receiving the threatening emails. A senior official from an ICSE-affiliated school detailed their standard operating procedure: "We now have an SOP in place that as soon as we get a bomb threat, we inform the city police. The premises are emptied and we wait for the BDDS to conduct a sweep. We allow people in only once we get the clearance that all is safe."
Police officers conducted their security checks in plain clothes to avoid causing unnecessary panic among students who were already under examination pressure. The response was swift and coordinated across all affected institutions, with nothing suspicious discovered at any location following thorough inspections.
State Board Examinations Also Affected
The incident also disrupted several schools affiliated with the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB), as state board examinations are currently underway. The four affected state board exam centers were Diwan Ballubhai School in Paldi, Sant Kabir School in Naranpura, Muktijivan School, and Ankur School in Paldi.
City District Education Officer Rohit Chaudhary confirmed that stringent security checks were carried out at all impacted centers before examinations were permitted to begin. The GSHSEB board chairman later verified that all examinations concluded across affected centers without major inconvenience to students.
Parental Concerns and Reassurance
The bomb threats understandably rattled parents across Ahmedabad, with many rushing to school premises upon hearing the news. Police personnel stationed at the schools worked to reassure concerned families that the situation was under control and that comprehensive security measures were being implemented.
The coordinated response between school authorities, education officials, and law enforcement ensured that despite the initial disruption, academic activities resumed safely. The incident highlights the importance of established security protocols in educational institutions during critical examination periods.
