BMC Engineer Held for Rs 2.5 Lakh Bribe in Mumbai

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday apprehended a sub-engineer of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh. The bribe was sought in exchange for granting permission for water drainage at the complainant's construction site.

Accused Identified

The arrested individual has been identified as Vishal Bhalchandra Vani, who serves in the rainwater drainage department of BMC's F/North division.

Initial Demand and Complaint

According to ACB sources, Vani initially demanded a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from the complainant. Unwilling to pay, the complainant approached the ACB on April 22 and filed a formal complaint.

Verification and Trap

During verification on April 22, it was established that Vani had reduced his demand to Rs 2.5 lakh for the water discharge permission. He allegedly agreed to accept this amount. The ACB laid a trap on Friday and caught him red-handed while accepting the Rs 2.5 lakh bribe from the complainant.

Legal Proceedings

Vani was produced before a court and has been remanded to police custody until April 27.
