Bhubaneswar Police Nab Three Suspects, Detain Minor in Violent Café Attack
In a significant breakthrough, Bhubaneswar city police have apprehended three adult men and taken a 17-year-old boy into custody in connection with a brutal armed assault that occurred outside a café in Patrapada. The incident, which took place under the jurisdiction of the Tamando police station late on Monday night, has raised serious concerns about public safety and law enforcement in the area.
Attack Stemmed from Long-Standing Personal Enmity
According to senior police officials, the violent episode originated from a deep-seated personal feud between the café proprietor, Kabiraj Lenka, and the individuals now in custody. While Lenka himself was fortunately absent from the premises at the time of the attack, his friends who were socializing outside the establishment became the unintended targets of the assailants' aggression.
"They had previous enmity with the café owner. The reason behind this hostility is under investigation. To settle personal scores, they came to attack the owner, but since he was absent, his friends were targeted," stated Deputy Commissioner of Police Jagmohan Meena during a press briefing.
Details of the Late-Night Violence Emerge
Reports indicate that around 11:50 PM, a group of men arrived at the location riding three motorcycles. Without warning, they launched a sudden and ferocious assault on four individuals who were engaged in conversation outside the café. Closed-circuit television footage from the scene captured the gang brandishing swords and attacking indiscriminately, causing panic and injury.
In addition to the physical assault on the victims, the perpetrators also vandalized three cars that were parked in the vicinity before fleeing the scene. The brazen nature of the attack has prompted police to intensify their search for three other suspects believed to be involved in the late-night violence.
Identities and Criminal Histories of the Arrested
The three adult men taken into custody have been identified as:
- Subham Behera, aged 20
- Soumya Ranjan Behera, aged 23
- Priyabrata Nayak, aged 22
Police records reveal that Soumya Ranjan Behera has a concerning history of criminal activity, with four prior cases registered against him in Khandagiri and Khurda. These previous charges include attempted murder, theft, and assault. Similarly, Priyabrata Nayak was previously implicated in an attempt to murder case in Khandagiri, indicating a pattern of violent behavior among some of the accused.
Police Probe Extends to Possible Political Dimensions
In a development that adds complexity to the case, law enforcement authorities are actively investigating potential political connections to the dispute. While the primary motive appears to be personal animosity, detectives are examining whether broader political influences or affiliations may have played a role in escalating the conflict or facilitating the violent response.
The detention of the 17-year-old minor highlights the involvement of younger individuals in serious criminal activities, raising additional concerns about youth engagement in violence and the need for preventive measures.
As the investigation continues, Bhubaneswar police have assured the public that they are committed to maintaining law and order and will pursue all leads to ensure that everyone involved in this disturbing incident is brought to justice. The case serves as a stark reminder of how personal disputes can escalate into public violence, endangering innocent bystanders and challenging community security.
