Betul Youth Arrested for Activating 84 SIM Cards Using Single Photo in Indore

In a significant crackdown on telecom fraud, the Indore crime branch has arrested a youth from Betul, Madhya Pradesh, for allegedly activating 84 SIM cards using his photograph to achieve bonus-linked targets. The accused, identified as Vipin Magarde, exploited facial authentication systems to carry out the fraudulent activations, raising serious concerns about security loopholes in the process.

Fraudulent SIM Card Activation Scheme Uncovered

Acting on intelligence inputs, a specialized team from the Indore crime branch identified three suspicious profiles linked to the city. Upon scrutinizing Customer Application Form (CAF) records and telecom data, investigators discovered that a single photograph was repeatedly used for multiple SIM card activations. This revelation pointed to a systematic misuse of facial authentication technology.

Additional DCP (Crime Branch) Rajesh Dandotiya stated that the investigation confirmed the repeated use of one photograph across numerous activations. Following this trail, the team traveled to Betul and detained Vipin Magarde for further questioning.

Confession and Modus Operandi Revealed

During interrogation, Magarde admitted to activating SIM cards from major telecom operators, including Vodafone Idea (VI), Airtel, and BSNL. His primary motive was to meet sales targets and earn higher incentives offered by these companies. To execute his scheme, he used Aadhaar details of unknown persons without their consent.

Furthermore, Magarde registered Point of Sale (POS) agents in the names of his sister and a friend without their knowledge, adding another layer of deception to his fraudulent activities. He revealed that once the targets were achieved, the SIM cards were deactivated to avoid detection.

Legal Action and Broader Implications

A case has been registered against Vipin Magarde under relevant sections of the Telecommunications Act, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the Information Technology (IT) Act. This arrest highlights the growing issue of SIM card fraud and the exploitation of facial authentication systems in India.

The Indore crime branch's action also targeted individuals and POS agents accused of misusing facial authentication to issue fake SIM cards. This case underscores the need for stricter verification processes and enhanced monitoring by telecom operators to prevent such fraudulent activities in the future.
