In a significant breakthrough, Berhampur Police have successfully dismantled a burglary gang with the arrest of three individuals. The operation led to the recovery of stolen property valued at more than Rs 35 lakh, marking a crucial win for law enforcement in the region.

The Arrest and Seizure Details

Acting on intelligence and evidence, police officials took three men into custody on Saturday. The arrested accused have been identified as Chintu Sethy (28) of Laxmi Nagar, Deepak Kumar Pattanaik (33) of Laxmi Bihar, and Akash Kumar Behera (32) of Chandramapeta Sahi in Berhampur.

From the accused, police confiscated a substantial haul of looted items. The seized property includes cash exceeding Rs 8.5 lakh, gold ornaments weighing 182.16 grams, and silver ornaments weighing 296 grams. Additionally, a two-wheeler, a cutter, a rod, and other valuables were recovered, bringing the total estimated value to over Rs 35 lakh.

Modus Operandi and Crime Spree

During interrogation, the accused confessed to their crimes, revealing their method of operation. According to Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M, the trio would roam the city and its outskirts during late-night hours. Their primary targets were locked houses.

After identifying a suitable target, they would break open the locks to steal gold, silver, cash, and other valuable items. Police investigation has linked the gang to at least five burglary cases – two within Berhampur town and three under the jurisdiction of the Nimakhandi police station.

Their most recent alleged crime was registered at the Nimakhandi police station in the Lochapada area on December 28, 2025.

Investigation and Future Steps

The breakthrough in the case came after police meticulously examined CCTV footage from the areas of the crimes, which helped them identify and track down the suspects.

Authorities have confirmed that the trio worked together to commit these burglaries. The police are also investigating whether any other individuals were involved with the gang to ensure all accomplices are brought to justice.

This arrest is expected to bring relief to the affected neighbourhoods and serves as a stern warning to criminal elements operating in the region.
