Bengaluru Students Arrested for Coercing Minor to Steal Family Gold
In a disturbing case from Bengaluru, two students have been arrested for allegedly coercing a minor into stealing gold ornaments from his own home, revealing a pattern of manipulation and blackmail that exploited friendship for criminal gain. The accused include a 16-year-old boy and a 20-year-old engineering student, who are said to have initially gained the trust of the victim, a 16-year-old classmate, before escalating their demands into a series of thefts.
How the Crime Unfolded
The case came to light when a software engineer residing in KN Extension, Yeshwanthpur, approached police on October 9, 2024, reporting missing gold ornaments from his apartment. He lives with his elderly mother, his wife who is also a tech professional, and their two school-going children. According to the complaint, the wife last wore the ornaments on October 1, 2024, for a function and stored them safely in a cupboard upon returning. When she attempted to use them again on June 10, 2025, for another function, she discovered they were missing.
The stolen items included a mangalya chain, bangles, earrings, gold chains, and gold dollars, with significant sentimental and monetary value. A case was registered under Section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for theft in a dwelling house, but it remained unsolved for months until a breakthrough occurred on March 25 this year.
Shocking Confession and Investigation
The complainant's son, the minor victim, admitted to police that he had been stealing gold from the house and handing it over to his friends. The accused had initially lured him into bringing cash for partying, citing personal problems, but soon escalated their demands. They began coercing and blackmailing him into repeatedly stealing gold ornaments, turning what started as peer pressure into a cycle of fear and exploitation.
Investigations revealed that the accused sold the stolen gold to jewellers with the assistance of a 45-year-old acquaintance, who falsely claimed the jewellery belonged to his wife. Police teams tracked down the accused in Yeshwanthpur, and during interrogation, both confessed to the crime. Authorities were able to recover 107 grams of gold from jewellers in Malleshwaram and on Magadi Road.
Recovery and Legal Actions
However, officers noted that the total quantity of stolen gold is significantly higher than what has been recovered so far, indicating that more items may still be missing or unrecovered. The juvenile accused has been remanded to a state-run boys' home, while the engineering student has been sent to judicial custody, pending further legal proceedings.
This case underscores the dangerous consequences of peer pressure and manipulation among youngsters, where friendship can devolve into fear and criminal exploitation. Police have emphasized the need for vigilance and open communication within families to prevent such incidents, highlighting how vulnerable minors can be targeted by peers for illicit activities.
