Bengaluru Family Tragedy: Debt and Illness Lead to Fatal Attack, Two Dead
A devastating incident unfolded in Bengaluru over the weekend, as a 26-year-old man, reportedly crushed by mounting business debts and the critical illness of his sister, allegedly attacked his family members before attempting to take his own life. The tragic event has left two dead and two others, including the alleged attacker, fighting for their lives in intensive care.
Details of the Incident
The horrifying scene occurred at Mallenahalli near Attibele in Anekal taluk on Saturday night. According to police reports, the deceased have been identified as Asha, aged 55, and her daughter Varshita, aged 32, both of whom died on the spot. The injured include Mayank, a 12-year-old boy, and Mohan MR, the 26-year-old alleged perpetrator. All victims were rushed to a private hospital in Attibele for emergency treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Mohan, who was involved in a chit fund and other business ventures, may have attacked Asha, Varshita, and Mayank with a knife, slitting their throats, before attempting to end his own life in a similar manner. The police have registered a case of murder and attempt to suicide at the Attibele police station in Bengaluru Rural district.
Financial and Health Pressures
Relatives and initial police findings point to severe financial distress as a key factor in this tragedy. Mohan recorded a video before the incident, stating that the family was unable to bear the pressure from lenders and was therefore taking this extreme step. This video was shared with relatives, highlighting the desperation that preceded the attack.
Compounding the financial woes, Varshita had been suffering from a brain tumour for over a year and a half and was reportedly in a critical condition. She was confined to a wheelchair, unable to move on her own. The family had incurred significant debt for her medical treatment, alongside losses from the chit fund business, which may have pushed them to a breaking point.
Both Asha and Varshita were homemakers, and Mayank is Varshita's son. The family had already faced personal losses, with Varshita losing her husband a few years ago due to cardiac arrest, and Mohan's father also passing away a few years prior.
Discovery and Response
Relatives and neighbours, who heard distressing sounds from the house, gathered to find the main door locked from inside. Mohan's paternal uncle, Shekar, peered through a window and noticed blood on the floor of the hall. They broke open the door to discover Asha and Mayank lying in a pool of blood in the hall, while Varshita was found dead in her wheelchair. Mohan was lying on the floor nearby.
Noticing some movement in Mayank and Mohan, the relatives rushed them to a nearby hospital and alerted the police. After receiving first aid, both were shifted to Narayana Hrudayalaya, where they are currently undergoing treatment in the ICU. The community is in shock, with relatives alleging that harassment by creditors may have driven the family to this extreme step.
Asha and her family were residing in their own house, with relatives staying in adjacent buildings, adding to the sense of closeness and tragedy in this tight-knit community. The incident underscores the severe impacts of financial strain and health crises on family dynamics, leading to irreversible consequences.
