Late-Night Drunken Rampage in Bengaluru Ends with Assault on Cab Driver and Police
A shocking incident of public violence unfolded late Saturday night on Sir M Visvesvaraya Road in Nayappanahalli, Hulimavu, Bengaluru. Two young college students, allegedly in a drunken state, went on a rampage, assaulting a cab driver, passers-by, and even police personnel after a minor traffic collision escalated into chaos.
Collision Sparks Violent Confrontation
The incident occurred between 10:45 PM and 11:00 PM when the accused—identified as Liza, 19, and Amran Mathew, 18—were returning home on a scooter after attending a party. They crashed into a Maruti Swift Dzire driven by Ahmed Gurkar, 47, damaging the rear-left portion of the car and causing themselves to fall.
Ahmed, in his complaint, stated that he initially tried to assist the girls. However, when he asked them to pay for the damage as they attempted to leave, the situation turned violent. "They started abusing me and assaulted me," he said, alleging they struck him with their hands, a helmet, and kicks.
Escalation and Police Intervention
As bystanders intervened to help Ahmed, the girls allegedly began attacking the gathered crowd as well. To prevent their escape, Ahmed removed the key from their scooter. One of the girls fled into a nearby restaurant to hide, while the other was restrained by residents, who promptly called police helpline 112.
A Hoysala patrol vehicle arrived at the scene, but the confrontation did not subside. The girls continued to hurl abuses even in the presence of police officers. Nearly 15 police personnel, including women staff, were required to bring the situation under control. A senior officer noted, "It took us almost 15 minutes to get them into the Hoysala vehicle. They were not in a condition to listen to anyone."
Aftermath and Injuries
Ahmed Gurkar suffered injuries during the attack and received medical attention. The two accused, both college students, were taken into custody. The incident highlights concerns over public safety and drunken behavior in the city, with authorities investigating the matter further.
This violent episode serves as a stark reminder of how minor accidents can spiral out of control, especially under the influence of alcohol, leading to harm for innocent individuals and straining law enforcement resources.
