Late-Night Drunken Rampage in Bengaluru Leads to Assault on Cab Driver and Police
In a shocking incident in Bengaluru, two young women allegedly went on a violent rampage after a traffic accident, assaulting a cab driver, bystanders, and even police personnel. The episode unfolded late Saturday night on Sir M Visvesvaraya Road in Nayappanahalli, Hulimavu, highlighting concerns over public safety and alcohol-fueled aggression.
Collision Sparks Chaos on Busy Road
The trouble began between 10:45 PM and 11:00 PM on Saturday when the accused, identified as Liza, 19, and Amran Mathew, 18, both college students residing in BTM Layout II Stage and Koramangala respectively, were returning home on a scooter after attending a party. According to police reports, they crashed into a Maruti Swift Dzire driven by Ahmed Gurkar, 47, a resident of Wajid Layout in Kothanur. The impact caused damage to the rear-left portion of Ahmed's car and led to the girls losing balance and falling off their scooter.
Ahmed, in his complaint to the authorities, stated that he initially tried to assist the young women. "I helped the girls get up. When they were leaving, I stopped them and told them there was damage to my car and they had to pay for its repair," he recounted. However, instead of cooperating, the situation quickly deteriorated as the duo began verbally abusing him before physically attacking him with their hands, helmet, and kicks.
Escalation Involving Bystanders and Police Intervention
As the altercation intensified, bystanders who witnessed the commotion intervened, demanding an explanation from the girls. This only fueled the chaos, with the accused allegedly turning their aggression towards the gathered crowd. In an attempt to prevent their escape, Ahmed removed the key from their scooter. One of the girls fled into a nearby restaurant to hide, while the other was restrained by the onlookers. "Though the girls were assaulting them, people stayed calm and brought the girl hiding in the restaurant outside," Ahmed noted, praising the crowd's composure.
Residents promptly alerted the police by calling helpline 112, leading to the arrival of a Hoysala patrol vehicle. Despite the presence of law enforcement, the girls reportedly continued their unruly behavior, hurling abuses, making obscene gestures, and attempting to strike Ahmed and others. It took nearly 15 police personnel, including female staff, to bring the volatile situation under control. A senior officer involved described the challenge: "It took us almost 15 minutes to get them into the Hoysala vehicle. They were not in a condition to listen to anyone."
Legal Actions and Aftermath
Following the incident, police summoned the parents of both students and registered a case based on Ahmed's complaint. The charges included assault, causing damage to property, and creating a public nuisance. The accused were served notice and released around 3:00 AM on Sunday. Authorities have indicated that further action will be taken after collecting statements from witnesses and reviewing footage from nearby surveillance cameras.
