Bengal STF Arrests Two Prime Suspects in Murder of Bangladeshi Activist Sharif Osman Hadi
The West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) made a significant breakthrough early on Sunday, apprehending two prime suspects in the high-profile murder case of Bangladeshi youth activist Sharif Osman Hadi. The arrests took place in Bongaon, a border town in West Bengal, marking a critical development in an investigation that has drawn international attention due to Hadi's prominent role in political upheavals in Bangladesh.
Details of the Arrest and Suspects
According to an official statement released by the Bengal STF, the operation was conducted based on "secret and credible information" that led to the capture of the two Bangladeshi nationals. The suspects have been identified as:
- Faisal Karim Masud, aged 37, a resident of Patuakhali, Bangladesh.
- Alamgir Hossain, aged 34, a resident of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The STF revealed that Faisal and Alamgir had illegally entered India through the Meghalaya border following the fatal attack on Hadi in Dhaka on December 12. After crossing into India, they frequently changed hideouts in an attempt to evade capture before eventually reaching Bongaon. The STF statement indicated that the duo "were trying to take shelter in the border area of Bongaon with the intention of crossing back into Bangladesh when an opportunity arises."
Background on the Victim and the Crime
Sharif Osman Hadi, a 33-year-old lecturer in the department of business studies at the University of Scholars in Dhaka, was a key figure in Bangladeshi activism. He served as the spokesperson for Inqilab Mancha and played a pivotal role in the July 2024 uprising that ultimately led to the dislodging of Sheikh Hasina's government. Hadi was known for his campaigns advocating for the banning of Hasina's Awami League and demanding a restructuring of treaties with India to ensure what he termed "justice-based sovereignty."
On December 12, Hadi was critically wounded after being shot in Dhaka. He was subsequently airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical treatment but succumbed to his injuries on December 18. His murder, occurring in the midst of a heated poll campaign in Bangladesh, triggered widespread violence and arson across the country, highlighting the volatile political climate.
Legal Proceedings and Interrogation
During preliminary interrogation by the Bengal STF, it was revealed that Faisal Karim Masud, along with Alamgir Hossain, had committed the murder of Osman Hadi. A case has been registered under the Foreigners Act, and a Bongaon court has sent both suspects to police custody for further investigation.
Indrajit Sarkar, Superintendent of Police (Operations) for the Bengal STF, confirmed the legal actions, stating, "A case has been registered under the Foreigners Act. A Bongaon court sent them to police custody." Additionally, Director-General of the Bengal STF, Jawed Shamim, emphasized that the authorities "will act according to court directives" as the investigation progresses.
Broader Implications and Coordination
Sources indicate that central agencies in India have been informed about the arrests, underscoring the cross-border nature of the case. Prior to this development, Dhaka police had already arrested several individuals, including Faisal's wife and close relatives, who were allegedly involved in helping the suspects flee Bangladesh.
In a related note, Meghalaya Police and the Border Security Force had previously denied claims in December that Faisal and Alamgir had been traced in the northeastern state or that their associates had been detained there. This highlights the challenges in tracking the suspects' movements across international borders.
The arrest of these two suspects by the Bengal STF not only represents a significant step towards justice for Sharif Osman Hadi but also underscores the ongoing cooperation and vigilance required in handling transnational crimes, especially those with deep political ramifications.
