The Bar Council of India (BCI) has issued a notice seeking a detailed report on the practice status of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee within 48 hours. This action follows her appearance in the Calcutta High Court, where she was reportedly seen wearing legal attire, including white advocate bands.
The communication, issued by BCI Principal Secretary Sriramanto Sen, stated that the Council had taken note of “various media reports” claiming that Banerjee appeared in court in legal attire. The BCI has requested the report from the concerned authorities to verify her enrollment and practice status as an advocate.
Mamata Banerjee, a trained lawyer, has been a registered advocate but her current practice status has come under scrutiny after her recent court appearance. The BCI’s move aims to ensure compliance with legal professional standards.
The development has sparked political reactions, with ruling party members defending Banerjee’s right to appear in court, while opposition leaders question the propriety of a sitting chief minister practicing law. The BCI’s report is expected to clarify the matter.
