Tragic Suicide in Bareilly Following Alleged Police Harassment Over Loan
A 50-year-old hardware trader tragically died by suicide inside his shop in Bareilly's Nawabganj area, minutes after receiving a phone call from police officers who allegedly threatened and harassed him over a monetary dispute. The incident has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about police conduct in Uttar Pradesh.
Family Alleges Police Complicity in Fatal Harassment
The victim, identified as Buddhsen, was reportedly under pressure to repay money he had borrowed from a man named Mukesh Kumar. According to family members, Kumar had filed a complaint with police alleging non-repayment, which triggered a chain of events that ended in tragedy.
Buddhsen's elder son Dinesh Chand provided a detailed account of what transpired. "My younger brother Akhilesh was briefly detained by police officers," Chand explained. "They used his mobile phone to call our father and allegedly threatened him directly. The police released my brother only after making that fateful call."
Chand continued with emotional intensity, "My father became so frightened by the police threats that he took the extreme step of ending his life. There was a monetary dispute with Mukesh Kumar, who complained to police claiming my father wasn't repaying the borrowed amount. This police intervention turned fatal."
Allegations of Abusive Language and Extortion Threats
Family members have made additional serious allegations against the police officers involved. They claim the policemen used abusive language during the phone call and explicitly threatened to send Buddhsen's son to jail unless the disputed money was paid immediately.
"The police didn't just threaten legal action," a family member revealed. "They used vulgar language and made it clear that unless the payment was made right away, they would ensure my brother faced imprisonment. This created unbearable pressure on my father."
Police Response and Official Investigation
Nawabganj circle officer Neelesh Mishra confirmed that authorities have registered a First Information Report against Mukesh Kumar for allegedly putting pressure on Buddhsen to repay the borrowed amount. "We have lodged an FIR against Mukesh Kumar for putting pressure on Buddhsen to repay the amount," Mishra stated. "Further investigation is currently underway."
Significantly, when questioned about the specific allegations made by Dinesh Chand against police officers, Mishra declined to comment. This silence has intensified concerns about potential police misconduct in the case.
Broader Implications and Community Impact
The incident has sent shockwaves through Bareilly's business community, particularly among small traders who often rely on informal lending arrangements. Many are now questioning whether police are being improperly used as debt collection agents in personal financial disputes.
Local residents have expressed anger and frustration, with several community leaders calling for a thorough, transparent investigation that examines both the actions of the creditor and the conduct of police officers involved in the case.
Human rights activists have highlighted the need for proper police training and accountability mechanisms, particularly when officers interact with citizens involved in civil disputes that haven't yet been adjudicated by courts.
The tragedy underscores the devastating consequences that can occur when law enforcement agencies are perceived as taking sides in personal financial matters rather than maintaining neutral positions as arbiters of justice.
