Bareilly Family Panchayat Turns Deadly: Husband Stabs Wife, Kills Mother-in-Law and Brother-in-Law
A family panchayat convened to resolve marital disputes in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, descended into a horrific tragedy on Monday afternoon. The incident, which has left the local community in deep shock, resulted in two fatalities and critical injuries to a woman.
Violent Outburst During Mediation Attempt
According to police reports, the violence erupted in the Rahpura Chaudhary locality of Bareilly's Izzatnagar area. Afzar Khan, a man in his late 30s, was participating in a family panchayat aimed at addressing ongoing marital discord with his wife, Saima Khan, aged 30. The couple had been married since 2017, but recent frequent quarrels had led Saima to stay at her parents' house for the past few days.
In a sudden and brutal turn of events, Afzar allegedly attacked Saima with a knife in front of all present, including their two young children, aged 8 and 5. He then proceeded to repeatedly stab his mother-in-law, Asma, 54, and brother-in-law, Adil, 20. Both Asma and Adil succumbed to their injuries on the spot, bleeding to death before help could arrive.
Wife Critically Injured in Intervention Attempt
Witnessing the attack on her family members, Saima attempted to intervene and stop her husband. During this effort, she sustained critical injuries from the knife. Doctors have reported that her health condition remains serious, and she is currently under medical care. Police authorities are working to record her statement before a magistrate as soon as her condition stabilizes.
Police Investigation Underway
Bareilly Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anurag Arya provided details on the ongoing investigation. A forensic team has inspected the crime scene, and the police are in the process of registering a First Information Report (FIR). To apprehend the accused, Afzar Khan, three police teams have been deployed. Authorities believe that CCTV cameras installed in the house will play a crucial role in establishing the exact sequence of events leading to the violence.
SSP Arya emphasized, "We are committed to ensuring justice in this case and will utilize all available resources to track down the accused." The incident has profoundly affected the neighbourhood, with residents expressing disbelief and horror at the turn of events during what was intended as a peaceful mediation.
