Major Edible Oil Theft Busted in Balangir
In a significant breakthrough, Balangir police successfully intercepted a pickup van carrying stolen edible oil and arrested two key suspects involved in the theft operation. The joint police team from Deogaon and Kantabanji police stations conducted the operation near Dumerpita village on Saturday night, recovering 150 tins of stolen edible oil worth substantial value.
The Theft and Investigation
The criminal activity came to light when Mukesh Kumar Jain, owner of a godown in Chatuanka area of Kantabanji, filed a formal complaint about the theft that occurred on Thursday. According to police reports, the stolen oil was taken from Jain's storage facility in a well-planned operation.
Acting on specific intelligence, police teams launched a chase and eventually intercepted the vehicle near Dumerpita village. The investigation revealed that Himansu Putel, 23, a resident of Chatuanka, masterminded the theft with the assistance of three associates. Along with Putel, police also arrested Santosh Punji, 35, who was actively involved in the criminal activity.
Police Statement and Ongoing Investigation
Gopal Chandra Karan, inspector in-charge of Kantabanji police station, described the operation as a well-coordinated effort that exposed a significant theft ring. "We have arrested two persons involved in this theft. Two others who participated in the crime are currently at large," Karan stated during his briefing to reporters.
Police examination confirmed that the confiscated consignment matched the exact stock stolen from Jain's godown. The seized oil comprised multiple brands and varieties, including both locally manufactured products and established national brands, indicating the thieves targeted a diverse range of products.
Food Safety Concerns and Legal Proceedings
In a crucial development, police have enlisted the assistance of the food safety wing to examine the quality and safety of the recovered edible oil. Officials are currently verifying legal registrations and compliance with food safety norms to determine whether the stolen oil was intended for public distribution.
The investigation continues to trace the complete supply chain and identify potential receivers of the stolen goods. Police authorities have confirmed that the arrested accused will be produced before a local court soon, while efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects are actively underway.
