Avadi Police Cuts Crime by 35%: How Tech & Strategy Made Chennai Safer in 2025
Avadi Sees Major Drop in Crime, Murders Down 21% in 2025

The Avadi city police commissionerate in Chennai has reported a substantial and encouraging decrease in major crimes throughout 2025. Data released by the force shows significant drops in violent offences, property crimes, and fatal road accidents, painting a picture of a safer urban zone.

Sharp Decline in Violent and Property Crimes

Official statistics highlight a marked improvement in public safety. The most serious of crimes, murder, saw a nearly 21% reduction, with cases falling from 48 in 2024 to 38 in 2025. Similarly, attempt-to-murder cases decreased from 40 to 28. The trend extended to property-related offences, which have long been a concern for residents.

House break-ins, a key indicator of property crime, fell by 11%. More dramatically, street crimes like chain-snatching and mobile phone-snatching plummeted by 35% and 30% respectively. In concrete numbers, chain-snatching incidents dropped from 34 to 22, while phone-snatching cases reduced from 61 to 43 over the year. General theft cases also declined from 165 to 147.

Technology and Targeted Enforcement Drive Success

Police officials credit this positive turnaround to a multi-pronged strategy combining advanced technology with boots-on-the-ground policing. A key technological tool has been the effective deployment of the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS). This centralized database has been instrumental in swiftly identifying and arresting habitual offenders, thereby improving detection rates and preventing repeat offences.

On the enforcement front, Avadi Police Commissioner Shankar pointed to sustained action against rowdies, proactive preventive strategies, and a consistent field-level presence of officers. The force also intensified crackdowns on ancillary crimes like drug trafficking and the sale of banned tobacco products, which often fuel other criminal activities. Crimes against women and children remained under close and constant monitoring.

Road Safety Sees Dramatic Improvement

Beyond conventional crime, the commissionerate also achieved a remarkable feat in road safety. Fatal road accidents witnessed a sharp decline of about 32%, falling from 424 cases in 2024 to 290 in 2025. This achievement was not accidental but the result of a scientific approach. Police conducted detailed mapping of accident-prone black spots and enforced traffic laws more strictly on identified vulnerable stretches, leading to safer roads for commuters.

The collective data from the Avadi city police underscores a year of significant operational success. By leveraging national tech resources like NAFIS and implementing focused, sustained policing measures on the street, the force has managed to curb a wide spectrum of crimes, enhancing security and public trust in the region.
