Autorickshaw Driver Apprehended Following Hit-and-Run Incident in Chikkamagaluru

In a significant development, the Chikkamagaluru district police have taken into custody an autorickshaw driver connected to a hit-and-run case that occurred earlier this week. The incident, which has drawn attention to road safety concerns in the region, unfolded in the Balagadi area.

Details of the Early Morning Accident

According to official police reports, the event took place on Monday at approximately 6:30 AM near the KEB Office in Balagadi. The accused, identified as Surendra from Balagadi, was operating an e-autorickshaw when he allegedly struck Eshwar, a resident of Thilak Nagar, who was on his routine morning walk.

The police stated that despite the autorickshaw toppling onto Eshwar during the collision, Surendra chose to flee the scene immediately, showing no regard for the victim's condition. This reckless abandonment has been highlighted as a critical aspect of the case under investigation.

Timely Intervention by a Good Samaritan

In a turn of events that may have saved Eshwar's life, another autorickshaw driver named Ibrahim noticed the injured man lying on the road. Demonstrating commendable civic responsibility, Ibrahim promptly shifted Eshwar to the Koppa government hospital for initial medical attention.

Furthermore, Ibrahim took the additional step of alerting Eshwar's family members, ensuring they were informed about the situation without delay. This act of kindness stands in stark contrast to the accused driver's actions.

Victim's Account and Police Action

Based on a formal complaint lodged by Eshwar's wife, K Nagarathna, it was revealed that Eshwar managed to explain the incident to his family while being transferred from Koppa to a hospital in Manipal for further treatment after receiving first-aid.

The Koppa police have since taken Surendra into custody and are actively investigating the case to gather all pertinent details and evidence. Authorities are examining the circumstances leading to the accident and the subsequent hit-and-run, with potential legal consequences for the accused.

This incident underscores ongoing issues related to road safety and driver accountability in the district, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.
